Before designing and planning a cabling system

The following is a concise list of questions that need to be answered before a cabling system installation can be designed and planned. A Lynx Networks project manager would determine the answers to these questions in discussion with the client, using any plans and specifications available. A site survey will always be carried out where possible.

Specification

Where are the cables going from and to?

Is the cable specification or the present and future purpose known?

Will any adverse conditions, such as water, affect the choice of cable?

Can the supplier carry out a site survey or do the calculations need to be carried out from plans?

Cable routes

Are cable routes available and accessible to meet the installation schedule?

Is containment required, either for aesthetic reasons and/or protection

Will the design of and ducts, conduit, tray and trunking allow installation of the cable without risk of damage?

What existing draw ropes are functional?

Do draw ropes need to be installed in any ducts?

Will any catenary wire needs to be installed?

Are existing catenary wires, if required, suitable for the additional cable?

Can the cable(s) be installed without damaging existing cables?

Can existing ceiling tiles, floor covers or duct covers be removed as required?

Safety

Are the premises or route are free of asbestos or is an asbestos register is available for reference?

Any there any known health and safety risks associated with the route? E.g. Unstable infrastructure, harmful substances, vermin?

What safety precautions will be required? E.g. Testing for gas hazard; Erection of guards and protective structures; Warning signs.

Program

Where does the cabling system installation fit into the program of works?

Copper clad aluminium (CCA) cables have aluminium cores with a copper coating. They have some legitimate uses but are now appearing under the guise of Cat5e cables. However, they do not comply with any British or European standards and will not perform as required. Be wary: If you are offered... [more...]

  • Is Cat6a worth it?

    Is Cat6a worth it?

The role of Cat6a (augmented) cabling is to support 10Gig Ethernet; that is its only advantage over Cat5e and Cat6, but a ten-fold improvement in bandwidth is pretty impressive. The other side of the scales has a couple of disadvantages; you need to decide which way the scales tip for any... [more...]
